She is best known as the muse of Serge Gainsbourg, who wrote several of her albums, and for her work on screen collaborating with such directors as Jacques RivetteAgnès Varda and Jacques Doillon. In recent years she has written her own album, directed a film and become an outspoken proponent of democracy in Burma.
Jane Birkin is an English singer and actress. Both aspects of her entertainment career have spanned five decades, from the mid sixties to present day. She is a member of the Order of the British Empire.
Jane Birkin was born in London, England in the year 1946. Her birthday is the fourteenth of December. In her twenties, Jane Birkin started appearing in movies like "The Knack... and How to Get It", "Wonderwall", "Kaleidoscope" and "Blow Up". "Blow Up" was Jane Birkin's first major success, as the film won the 1967 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. "Blow Up" was also noteworthy in the United Kingdom for being the first film in that country to have female frontal nudity. The film also included several people who were current famous or soon to be famous, such as the Yardbirds, Michael Palin and Janet Street-Porter. Jane Birkin was married to John Barry during this period of early acting, but after their divorce in 1968 she decided to move to France, finding parts in movies like "Trop petit mon ami", "Trop jolies pour etre honnetes" and "Le Mouton enrage" over the following decade as she became popular in France for her music career.
Jane Birkin released the worldwide hit single "Je t'aime... moi non plus", which incorporated sexual female groaning, on her debut album "Jane Birkin / Serge Gainsbourg". Over the next four decades she would release fifteen more albums, including "Di doo dah", "Lolita go home", "Ex fan des sixties" and "Baby alone in Babylone".
Meanwhile, Jane Birkin continued to appear in films such as "La fille prodigue" and "La pirate" (which was nominated for the Cesar Award, the French equivalent to the American Academy Award). Other films that she has appeared in (out of dozens over her career), are "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries", "Death on the Nile", "Evil Under the Sun", "Dust" and "Le Divorce".
As of early 2007 Jane Birkin continues to act and to release new albums. She has been inducted into the Order of the British Empire for her services to acting
